The Different Components of a Frameless Glass Balustrade

Date: 27 September 2016

By LaurentMace - A balustrade essentially acts like a horizontal support structure or a handrail. Frameless glass was designed typically for pool fencing. However, frameless fencing has very clean and crisp lines.

These, in combination with the fact that this installation provides a very clear view of the outdoors, made architects and home builders use frameless glass balustrades for various other settings like balconies and internal staircases and landing spaces too.

These frameless glass balustrades became replacements for traditional aluminum or framed glass balustrades.

In addition to high-grade tempered glass, there are a number of other parts that go into making glass fencing and balustrades. Let’s take a closer look at what these are:

Most components that are used in frameless glass pool fences can also be used in installing frameless glass balustrades. The spigots are used in both the features and so is the tempered 12mm glass.

When it comes to the minimum height of the balustrades, most installers will use 1 meter high installations. However, some people also choose to use pool fencing glass that’s 1200mm high glass pool fencing.

That’s because when a person is seated in the balcony, the handrail is then above the eye-level, which gives you a clear an unhindered view, compared to an installation in which the handrail is positioned at a height of only 1 meter (which impedes the view).

Today, frameless glass balustrades and outdoor fencing is increasingly being used in residential and commercial applications across Sydney.

These handrails are made of SS as the material doesn’t corrode, stain or rust easily in the manner that standard steel does.

However, if you are installing the balustrade in an outdoor environment that has high salinity or an environment that has a poor circulation environment, it’s important to use high grade stainless steel handrails.

There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required. These are continuous small oval handrails that are available in variants such as:

There are a number of different methods of fixing the frameless glass balustrades, based on the surface that’s available. The method that’s the most cost-effective and popular is:

These fixtures are ideal for fixing toughened glass and they add to the strength and durability of the structure.

These are available in various specifications and can suit glass that is 6m-18mm thick, based on your required installation. There are different types of clamps available:

All the clamps also come with rubber gaskets that are made to hold glass panels of various thicknesses.
